The Problem
Seminole County Public Schools have lost 1900 students over the past two years with at least another 1000 student decline projected for 2008-2009.
The actual budget deficit estimates of between $23 million and $26 million are based upon the estimated revenue reductions, as well as projected cost increases for items such as diesel fuel, health insurance, and utilities.
Declining enrollment combined with significant state funding decreases has necessitated the reduction of 300 positions.
"There will be pain because you're going to see some things are being cut but when you look at the basic target of education -- the fundamentals of educating students in the classroom, we're trying very hard to hold those classrooms and those children harmless," said Regina Klaers, a spokeswoman for the Seminole County Schools.
